WHAT IS A SCREENING COLONOSCOPY?
A screening colonoscopy is a preventive medical procedure used to look for early signs of colorectal cancer or precancerous growths (polyps) in people who do not have any symptoms
- Purpose: A preventive measure to find and remove polyps before they become cancerous.
- Patient Status: Asymptomatic, meaning you have no signs or symptoms.
- Criteria: Typically for average-risk adults aged 45 or older with no personal or family history of polyps or colon cancer.
- Cost: Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), these are usually covered at 100% with no out-of-pocket costs (no copay or deductible)
What is the difference between a screening colonoscopy and a diagnostic colonoscopy?
While both procedures use the same equipment, the distinction lies in the reason for the test, which determines how it is billed to your insurance.
When am I supposed to have a screening colonoscopy?
At 45 yrs. of age without a family history of colon cancer.
At 40 yrs. of age if you have a family history of colon cancer.
If polyps are not found, you are eligible for a repeat in 10 years or repeat in 5 years with a family history of colon cancer
If polyps are found, based on the results you may need a repeat sooner. Most polyps are investigated 3-5 years later.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR A DIAGNOSTIC COLONOSCOPY ?
Patients with symptoms of abdominal pain, a change in bowel habits or intestinal bleeding require a colonoscopy to rule out colon disease and cancer.
Not considered purely preventive; you may be responsible for a copay, coinsurance, or deductible.
If you have these symptoms and are due for a screening colonoscopy, we can bill the procedure under a preventative code. Patients that have had a recent colonoscopy for preventative purposes but require a repeat will need to be billed as a diagnostic to obtain coverage under insurance.

Other reasons include
- We use the easiest preps for your colonoscopy. Most likely you will be able to take a simple pill prep or very low dose liquid prep. We are not a fan of large, unbearable gallon preps unlike others. Why make it hard?
- We will preferentially schedule you at an outpatient center to avoid a hospital stay. This makes the whole experience smooth and less of a hassle. We use the highly rated Dublin Surgery Center in Dublin, OH. An OhioHealth facility.
- You will not "be awake" for your colonoscopy. All patients are able to have sedation. There will be no pain or cramping during your procedure.
- Your colonoscopy will be with Dr. Reed. You won't have a nurse practitioner or another physician perform this important test. Large gastroenterology groups have a tendency to randomly assign you to whomever is available that morning.

Dr. David Reed
Dr. Reed started his practice Colorectal Specialists in 2007 and has performed countless colonoscopies for his patients over his career. He served as President of his professional college and program director of the annual surgical clinical assembly twice. Dr. Reed has also been a guest lecturer for local family practice societies as well as medical students at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, Ohio University, and Grandview Medical Center in Dayton.
His practice recently relocated to Dublin, still serving the greater Columbus metro area.
He married his medical school sweetheart 20 years ago and has two wonderful daughters who are growing up too fast.
